95-year-old man assaulted, carjacked in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. — Authorities said a 95-year-old man was pushed to the ground and carjacked Monday afternoon in the Dimond district.
According to authorities, the man suffered abrasions to his head and other parts of his body and was taken to a hospital. There was no medical update on the man’s condition on Tuesday.
The altercation occurred around 2:30 p.m. Monday in the 2500 block of MacArthur Boulevard.
According to police, the man had just left a nearby restaurant and was walking to his 2007 Toyota minivan when a man wearing a ski mask approached him and pushed him to the ground.
The suspect drove away with the keys to the vehicle. The vehicle was discovered shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, abandoned a few blocks away in the 2600 block of Montana Street, according to police.
The suspect was being sought by police on Tuesday. There was no detailed description provided.
The restaurant’s owner, who did not want to be identified, said Tuesday that the man has been a regular customer for about 40 years.
According to the owner, the man is friendly and enjoys conversing with other customers. “He’s family,” the proprietor explained.
The owner and others who knew the man were outraged by the attack.
“Why would anyone want to attack a 95-year-old man?” The owner inquired. “It’s just ridiculous.”
Oakland police and Crime Stoppers are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
