A new retro Barbie flip phone aims to take smartphone-addicted teens back to simpler times

The new Barbie phone with no access to social media has already been launched in the UK and will be available soon in the US

Human Mobile Devices, the company behind Nokia phones, has teamed up with toymaker Mattel to launch a Barbie “dumb phone.”

According to a press release announcing the device, the retro flip phone has a camera, alarm, MP3 player, and texting and call functions but no access to the internet or social media apps.

Its focus is on simplicity and living life in the real world without the distraction of the internet.

The Barbie phone’s release comes as some Gen Zers ditch their smartphones for pared-back “dumb phones” to cut screen time.

Its launch also comes as kids return to school at a time when more schools and districts are moving to ban smartphones at school to some degree.

The use of smartphones by young people has faced scrutiny by parents, educators, politicians, and even cell operators.

The new Barbie phone is currently available in the UK for £99 ($130) and will soon be on sale in the US.

It has fun accessories like a Barbie-styled beaded lanyard, attachable charms, and stickers.
