The 15 fastest-shrinking jobs in the US

Employment of telemarketers is projected to fall 21.5% from 2023 to 2033.

It likely will be harder over the next decade to find jobs as switchboard operators, telemarketers, and engine assemblers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics published new projection data this week, including the occupations with the largest projected drops in employment from 2023 to 2033.

The fastest-shrinking job category is word processors and typists, which is projected to have employment tumble by 38% from 2023 to 2033, or a decline of 15,200 jobs.

Below are the 15 fastest-shrinking job categories in the US.

None of the 15 fastest-shrinking jobs had a six-figure median annual wage, data from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program shows. Still, a few of them had median pay above the median for all occupations, which was $48,060.

While word processors and typists could see employment drop the quickest among occupations, cashiers could see the largest employment drop from 2023 to 2033. BLS found this job is projected to see employment drop by 353,100, or a 10.6% decline.

Customer service representatives and general office clerks were the only two other jobs with employment projected to fall by more than 100,000.

“The growth of e-commerce as well as advances in technology are expected to limit demand for sales workers leading to employment declines,” a news release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Thursday. “Similarly, automated systems and related technology, including AI, are expected to contribute to declines in employment of office and administrative support workers.”
