Trustee area hearings

The Fremont Union High School District board of trustees recently passed a resolution signaling its intention to move from at-large governing board elections to trustee area elections. The board is looking for community feedback on the trustee area boundary map.

A public hearing on the “pre-map” was held on Aug. 22, and another is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 6:15 p.m. at the regular district board meeting. The board is not permitted by law to review or consider maps at this hearing, but it will accept public input on how the boundaries should be drawn.

Following that, the board will hold at least two more public hearings to review draft maps.

On www.fuhsd.org/trustee-areas, updates on opportunities for public input, the process for developing the trustee area boundary map, dates of relevant hearings, and the draft boundary maps themselves will be posted.

American history essay contest

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Los Altos chapter is hosting an American history essay contest for students in grades 5-8 who live in the chapter area, which includes Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

This year’s contest theme is “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Students will pretend they are newspaper reporters for the Philadelphia Times in 1897, writing articles about John Philip Sousa’s new march, which was first performed on May 14, that year.

Each grade level will have one winner chosen by three judges. The winners will be invited to read their work at the Los Altos DAR meeting in February 2024. These essays will then advance to the next level of competition, with the winning essays advancing to compete at the state level.
