Rollover crash on I-280 leaves one dead

The crash was first reported just before 3 a.m. on Sunday

One person was killed in a rollover crash on Interstate 280 near San Mateo early Sunday.

The accident occurred just before 3 a.m. on Sunday at the Highway 92 interchange. Callers to 911 reported that one vehicle had rolled over and another had collided with an unknown object in the southbound lanes of the highway.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene. According to preliminary findings, a Volkswagen was southbound on I-280 when it made a sharp left turn for “unknown reasons.” The vehicle collided with a concrete pillar supporting the Highway 92 overpass, overturned, and came to rest in the fast lane.

According to the Redwood City CHP, at around 75 mph, a Honda driven by a 31-year-old San Jose man collided with the disabled Volkswagen. According to the CHP report, the Honda driver’s attention was diverted elsewhere when the crash occurred.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 39-year-old San Francisco woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. She has yet to be identified.

According to the CHP, the Honda’s passenger, a 31-year-old San Jose woman, was taken to Stanford Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Honda was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to officials. It’s unclear whether the driver of the Volkswagen was under the influence.
