Elon Musk’s ‘apocalypse-proof’ Cybertruck gets its 5th recall in 12 months

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveils the Cybertruck at an event in 2019.

Tesla’s Cybertruck has had a rocky rollout since it launched last year — and now it’s hit another speed bump.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing released on September 26 said Tesla was recalling more than 27,000 of the futuristic pickup trucks over an issue with the rearview camera that could increase the risk of crashing when reversing.

The agency said that the recall affected 27,185 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13 and September 14 and that the automaker had released an over-the-air software update designed to fix the problem.

In a report submitted to the agency, Tesla said that under certain conditions, the image from the rearview camera on some Cybertrucks could fail to display within two seconds of the driver putting the vehicle into reverse, a violation of federal regulations.

The report said Tesla was not aware of any collisions or injuries as a result of the problem.

It’s the fifth recall of the Cybertruck in the past year. The electric truck has been recalled over problems with its giant wiper and concerns that the accelerator pedal could become jammed open.

Elon Musk has at various times said that the Cybertruck would be “apocalypse-proof” and bulletproof and that it could even serve as a boat.

The latest recall hints at just how many Cybertrucks Tesla has sold. The company doesn’t disclose quarterly sales of the stainless-steel pickup, but data from S&P Global Mobility suggested it delivered about 5,175 Cybertrucks in July.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment sent outside normal working hours.
