49ers see trio claimed off waivers before they can reach practice squad
Cornerback D’Shawn Jamison and offensive linemen Keith Ismael and Ilm Manning got claimed off waivers after failing to make the 49ers’ initial 53-man roster
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Three undrafted rookies who stood out in the 49ers’ training camp and preseason were claimed off waivers on Wednesday, a day after failing to make the team’s initial 53-man roster.
According to NFL Media, cornerback D’Shawn Jamison was acquired by the Carolina Panthers, and offensive linemen Keith Ismael and Ilm Manning were added to the Arizona Cardinals’ roster.
By virtue of their records from last season, the Cardinals are third on the waiver wire, while the Panthers are ninth.
The 49ers received no waiver claims and have the third-lowest priority, trailing only the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Typically, the 49ers’ practice squad is made up of players who have been waived, as coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned on Saturday: “Normally throughout the year, people go down and we like to bring people back that we know.” We don’t like getting random guys. So, if there are people who have established relationships in here and have demonstrated that they can fit in here, just because they aren’t on our 53-man roster doesn’t mean they won’t have an opportunity to be a part of this team at some point during the year.”
The 49ers announced 16 practice squad members, with one spot remaining because Mexican offensive tackle Alfredo Gutierrez has a league exemption for a third street year through the international-player program. Ex-Green Bay Packers cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles is expected to fill that vacancy.
Defensive linemen Alex Barrett and Marlon Davidson, fullback Jack Colletto, offensive linemen Leroy Watson and Corey Luciano, safety Qwuantrezz Knight, linebacker Curtis Robinson, tight end Troy Fumagalli, wide receivers Tay Martin, Wille Snead, and Isaiah Winstead, and cornerback Tre Swilling are also on the practice squad.
Defensive ends Austin Bryant and Kerry Hyder Jr. (both expected to re-sign today); defensive tackle T.Y. McGill; wide receivers Chris Conley, Anthony Miller, and Willie Snead IV; and running backs Brian Hill and Jeremy McNichols were released and are not on the waiver wire.
