Football schedule change: Los Gatos to face Sacramento power Grant, not Live Oak
Los Gatos scrambles to find an opponent after the Live Oak game is called off
Instead of traveling to Live Oak as originally planned, the Los Gatos football team will host Sacramento powerhouse Grant on Friday night.
After the Live Oak game was canceled over the weekend, the South Bay school was forced to scramble.
Los Gatos announced the match on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday. Los Gatos announced on Tuesday that the game would take place in the Bay Area. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
“A special thanks to Athletic Director and Head Coach Carl Reed, as well as the Grant Administration, for making this game possible on such short notice!” Los Gatos made a post on the social media platform.
When asked why his team’s game against Los Gatos had been canceled and if his school would seek another opponent, Live Oak coach Mike Gemo declined to comment.
On Friday, the Acorns, ranked 24th by the Bay Area News Group, defeated Mountain View 20-14.
Los Gatos coach Mark Krail learned of the cancellation last weekend, but believes it was caused by Live Oak.
Los Gatos went online to look for opponents now that the game was no longer on the schedule. The Wildcats reached out to Grant, who was also looking for a game, and agreed to play.
Los Gatos was hoping to avoid a trip to Sacramento after traveling to Brentwood last weekend to face Liberty.
The pieces fell into place for Los Gatos, which was ranked fifth by the Bay Area News Group on Tuesday.
The Wildcats must now prepare to face a 2-1 opponent, Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills, with the loss coming against another powerhouse, 21-18.
Grant defeated Reno 40-0 last week.
“They’re a great team,” Krail said. “But I’d rather play someone than not play at all.” When you get to the playoffs and everything, you start worrying about numbers and how it will affect (seeding). Hey, the kids deserve 10 football games, and we were fortunate to find an opponent who was also looking really good.
“We’re trying to improve, and one way to improve is to play good teams.”
