No. 1 Serra 38, Central Catholic-Modesto 7

If the Padres had any doubts after uneven performances in their first two games this season, they were put to rest Friday night in Modesto against a very good Central Catholic team. In its final tuneup before West Catholic Athletic League play begins Sept. 22 against Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco, Serra (3-0) outscored the home team 28-0 in the second half. In the one-sided victory, quarterback Maealiuaki Smith threw two touchdown passes and 6-foot-6 tight end Cole Harrison caught two TD passes – one from Smith and the other from Nano Latu on a halfback option. More importantly for coach Patrick Walsh, Serra has outscored its last two opponents 48-0 after halftime. “We played for the full 48 minutes,” Walsh said. “We prepare for that. All of the teams we play are formidable. We have to play the entire 48 minutes.” The game was competitive for the first half. Jaden Green scored on a 5-yard run less than a minute into the game, but that was the offense’s only score until Thomas Gooch kicked a 45-yard field goal in the final two minutes of the second quarter to give Serra a 10-7 lead at the half. It was all Serra when the teams returned. Harrison’s touchdowns came from 27 and 7 yards out. In the third quarter, Braden Agosta caught a 34-yard pass to make the score 24-7. No. 2 De La Salle 35, No. 12 St. Francis 17

With 4:19 left in the game, quarterback Toa Faavae scored on a 12-yard bootleg to give visiting De La Salle its first double-digit lead of the season. Shortly after, the Spartans added another touchdown to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1975. The game story is provided by Darren Sabedra.

No. 3 Pittsburg 10, Monterey Trail-Elk Grove 7

Pittsburg won its home opener, improving to 3-0, thanks to an interception by Noah Quesada in the final minute. Marley Alcantara’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Quesada in the first quarter put the Pirates up 7-0 against a team looking for its first win after losses to Folsom and St. Francis. The teams remained tied until Pittsburg’s Jesus Lua Amaya kicked a short field goal with about five minutes remaining to take the lead. No. 4 San Ramon Valley 45, Elk Grove 7

San Ramon Valley was on the road for the third time in a row on Friday. The Danville school, led by last season’s Bay Area News Group player of the year Luke Baker, defeated a home team by a wide margin. Baker threw six touchdown passes to lead the Wolves to a 28-7 halftime lead and never looked back. Owen Scott had two touchdown receptions, while Hudson Brinton had three. Baker’s touchdown pass broke a 7-7 tie, and his 34-yard connection with Scott increased the lead to 21-7. Evan Economos also had a receiving touchdown as SRV scored 40 points for the third time in a row. The Wolves defeated St. Ignatius 42-14 and Acalanes 44-21 in their first two games. Next Friday, SRV hosts McClymonds, which has outscored Bellarmine (40-0) and Bishop O’Dowd (45-0) by a combined 85-0. Grant-Sacramento 22, No. 5 Los Gatos 21

Los Gatos fell just one point short in an intersectional battle against visiting Grant-Sacramento, the defending state champion, in a game that came about in the middle of the week on short notice after Live Oak canceled its game against the Bay Area team. No. 6 Valley Christian 34, Hollister 3

Valley Christian built a 13-3 halftime lead on its way to a blowout victory in its final game before WCAL play begins in two weeks. Sophomore Ekiah McLemore, who scored two touchdowns in a win over Salinas last week, led the Warriors with three on Friday. Valley Christian, which won one game last season, improved to 3-0 with touchdowns from Joseph Stephens and Marcel Leggett Jr. Valley will have a week off before hosting Bellarmine in a WCAL opener on September 23. St. Bonaventure-Ventura 24, No. 7 Archbishop Riordan 14

St. Bonaventure rushed for 175 yards, held off Riordan’s potent offense, and made enough big plays to defeat the Crusaders in San Francisco. In the fourth quarter, Koen Glover’s 25-yard touchdown run and Drew Cofield’s punt return touchdown erased a 14-10 Riordan lead. Riordan’s Michael Mitchell Jr. set a school record by completing 27 of 39 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Lawson, who had 13 receptions for 134 yards, caught both touchdowns, including a 35-yard go route that gave Riordan the lead in the fourth quarter. Cynai Thomas, a sophomore wide receiver, had 10 receptions for 91 yards. Riordan fell to 2-1. St. Bonaventure is now 2-2. — Dycus, Joseph

No. 8 McClymonds 45, Bishop O’Dowd 0

In the first meeting between Oakland’s top public and private school football programs in over a decade, host McClymonds dominated with 328 rushing yards. Mack was led by Sharky Tamale and Tajir Golden, who each scored two touchdowns. The full report from Oakland by Joseph Dycus is available here.

No. 10 Wilcox 28, Sacred Heart Cathedral 12

In a win over Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, the Wilcox ground attack rushed for 337 yards (eight yards per carry). As the Chargers improved to 2-1, QB Tyson Bonilla ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns in 16 attempts, and Jamontay Amataga had 15 carries and two touchdowns for 109 yards. In addition, Bonilla completed 6 of 7 passes for 66 yards. Wilcox (2-1) announced this week that it is looking for an opponent for next weekend or the weekend after its Thursday game at The King’s Academy was canceled. No. 11 El Cerrito 34, Fremont-Oakland 0, forfeit

The game was called off about two minutes before halftime because Fremont didn’t have enough players to field a team. “Fremont had very low numbers, then a few kids got hurt,” said El Cerrito coach Jacob Rincon. The game will be recorded as a forfeit, but the stats will be recorded. Micah Avery scored in the first quarter on touchdown runs of 15 and 70 yards. Before the game was called, El Cerrito (3-0) scored three more times in the second quarter. Gavin Thompson returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown, quarterback Michael Vanhook connected with three-star recruit Kamani Jackson for a 25-yard touchdown pass, and Vanhook added a 10-yard rushing score. Fremont’s next two non-league games are against Liberty and Livermore. The Tigers (0-3) will then have back-to-back bye weeks before beginning Oakland Athletic League play against Oakland on Oct. 13. – Michael Lefkow

No. 13 Liberty 53, Wood-Vacaville 14

Liberty sophomore running back Jaxon Bell had a big night as the host Lions bounced back from a one-point loss to Los Gatos to beat Wood. In 14 carries, Bell rushed for 266 yards and six touchdowns to lead Brentwood to its second victory in three games this season. Liberty’s senior Ryan McKendry also scored on a 95-yard run. After the first quarter, the Lions led 19-7, 32-7 at halftime, and 46-7 after three quarters. Next Friday, Liberty will host Fremont-Oakland before traveling to San Ramon Valley on September 22. No. 14 Monte Vista 40, Bellarmine 30

Brayden Turner completed 11 of 19 passes for 328 yards and five touchdowns, one short of the school record, to lead the host Mustangs (1-2) past the Bells (1-2). With 2:15 left in the fourth quarter and a three-point lead, Turner evaded a blitz and found Julian McMahan open for a game-winning 25-yard touchdown pass as Monte Vista improved to 3-0 for the second time in three years. No. 15 St. Ignatius 35, Cathedral Catholic-San Diego 28

For the second week in a row, the Wildcats (2-1) won a thriller, scoring the game’s final two touchdowns to overcome a 28-20 fourth-quarter deficit. With 2:56 remaining, QB Soren Hummel broke a 28-28 tie with a keeper. With 5:53 left in the game, Hummel connected with Pierce St. Geme on a 2-point conversion after Mo Barnum’s touchdown made it 28-26. Last week, St. Ignatius won 28-27 over Jesuit-Carmichael after the home team failed to convert a 2-point conversion with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. St. Ignatius led Cathedral Catholic (1-3) 20-7 midway through the third quarter before the San Diego visitors scored three unanswered touchdowns. Jarious Hogan’s 4-yard run extended the Wildcats’ lead to 13 points. SI is off next week before hosting San Francisco rival Riordan in the WCAL opener on September 23. – Michael Lefkow

No. 16 Archbishop Mitty 35, Santa Teresa 0

Mitty, which was playing on the road, led 21-0 at halftime and finished its non-league schedule 3-0. The Monarchs started the season by defeating James Logan and Aptos. Joey Campagna passed for 119 yards and two touchdowns, and Elijah Bautista carried 16 times for 142 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown run after halftime, to lead the Monarchs on Friday. In the first half, Bautista scored on a 4-yard run. Toju Maku (64-yard TD reception) led six Mitty players who caught passes. The Monarchs added two third-quarter touchdowns to their tally. No. 17 Amador Valley 14, No. 22 Acalanes 12

As Amador Valley rallied from a 12-point deficit to defeat host Acalanes, Jake Goldsworthy scored on a 5-yard run and stand-in quarterback Aidan Foley scored from 10 yards out. The home team, which dropped to 0-3, scored all of its goals in the first half. Mike Lefkow has more information here.

No. 18 Campolindo 14, Windsor 14

Scott Lyon’s 30-yard reception on fourth-and-12 from the Windsor 40 set up host Campolindo’s fourth-quarter tying touchdown. The visitors then drove down the field but failed to convert a 33-yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds remaining. The decision to play overtime was left up to the coaches, and Campo’s Kevin Macy, whose team beat Vanden-Fairfield in double overtime to start the season before losing 6-0 at home to Amador Valley last week, chose to settle for a tie. Campo has a record of 1-1-1. Windsor has a 0-1-1 record. Campo led 7-0 at halftime thanks to Micah Parker’s 1-yard run in the second quarter. No. 20 California 42, Escalon 21

The Grizzlies led 42-14 after three quarters, cruising to their second straight victory following a season-opening loss. Jayden Macedo, the senior quarterback, threw five touchdown passes for 201 yards. In California’s three games, he has eight touchdown passes. Three of Macedo’s air strikes landed on Nick Fox, covering 86, 24 and 53 yards. Chase McGill apprehended the other two. The first was 25 yards, and the second was 13 yards. Macedo completed 9 of 13 passes for 234 yards. The Grizzlies led 21-7 at halftime before doubling the score and doubling their lead in the third quarter. Escalon came in with a 3-0 record, including a 42-39 victory over Windsor last week. No. 21 Christopher 28, San Mateo 7

Wil Rizqallah carried the ball 13 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Amari Bluford added a goal for the Cougars. Evan Vernon, a strong safety, had a monster game with 16 tackles, including two for loss. Jaxen Robinson completed 8 of 16 passes for 74 yards and one touchdown. East Bay

Alameda 18, Mills 10

After falling behind 10-0 in the first 12 minutes, the Hornets battled back. They are now 3-0 and should be favorites in the Island Bowl against Encinal on September 22. Alameda overcame a 10-point deficit against Mills by scoring six points in the second quarter and 12 more in the fourth quarter. Alameda’s touchdown came from sophomore Landyn Cole. Sinisa Finau stood out on defense for the Hornets. The senior, who stands 6-0 and weighs 245 pounds, had 10 tackles and a sack. Alhambra 45, Pinole Valley 7

In an easy win for the Bulldogs (2-0), quarterback Beau Blau threw four touchdown passes and ran 42 yards for another. After a 7-7 tie after the first 12 minutes, Alhambra erupted for 24 points in the second quarter. Blau, a 5-11 senior, threw touchdown passes to three different receivers, two of whom were Luke Beaty. In addition, he made contact with Sylas Mankin and Lucas Pieper. Mason Jones scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter to break a 7-7 tie and set the Bulldogs on a 38-point run to the end of the game. Alhambra kicker Mason Stinson had a strong night, going 6 for 6 on extra points and booting a 26-yard field goal just before halftime to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 31-7. Pinole Valley (1-2) also lost two of its first three games last season before going 8-2 and winning the Division 7AA CIF state championship. American Canyon 30, Foothill 28

Foothill suffered a heartbreaking loss on the final play of the game when Mason Harris’ Hail Mary pass from midfield deflected into the arms of receiver Jalen Rocker for a touchdown, giving visiting American Canyon a stunning victory. Foothill took the lead with 12 seconds remaining when Michael O’Donoghue caught a touchdown pass from Erik Olsen. American Canyon had a final shot from midfield after a squib kick. Foothill was looking to rebound from a 28-25 season-opening loss to Heritage, and Olsen finished with three touchdown passes. American Canyon (2-1) got four touchdown passes from Harris, who extended plays all night. Next Friday, Foothill will visit El Cerrito. Darren Sabedra’s

James Logan 42, Antioch 42

Larenzo Mayfield threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns as the Panthers (2-1) raced out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead in a surprisingly easy victory. Elijah Stingley, Ozias Slocum-Pierre, Keon Fosselman, and Issac Gaines scored all four touchdowns. Stingley added two more touchdowns on the ground. In three games this season, Mayfield, a 5-8 senior, has thrown for eight touchdowns and 502 yards. Against James Logan, he was 14 for 18. The Colts fell to 0-3, despite playing against Archbishop Mitty, California, and the Panthers on Friday night. Berkeley 41, De Anza 14

Drew Henderson threw four touchdown passes to lead the Yellowjackets to their first victory after two losses. Three-star recruit Benjamin Thurman caught two of Henderson’s scoring passes. Dashiell Guerreiro-Ramos caught two more, and Deontae Faison added a third touchdown reception. Berkeley led 16-0 four minutes into the game after Henderson completed passes of 74 and 65 yards to Thurman. Midway through the second quarter, the Jackets increased their lead to 28-7. De Anza’s Desmond Sparks scored on a 1-yard run to cut Berkeley’s lead to 28-14 at the half, but the Dons (0-3) couldn’t get any closer. Thurman, a junior who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 215 pounds, has already received offers from San Jose State, Oregon State, and Nevada. Boston College is also interested in him, according to Berkeley coach David Perry. In college, he could play anywhere from wide receiver to edge. Granada 47, Castro Valley 7

Quinn Boyd, the Matadors’ (2-1) quarterback, scored five touchdowns. He threw three touchdown passes, all to Peyton Richards, a junior who caught six passes for 167 yards. Granada totaled 513 yards of offense, with Boyd rushing for two touchdowns. Boyd threw for 294 yards and the Matadors ran for 219 more. Granada was led by Estevan Duarte, who gained 74 yards on eight carries. Richards, a 6-3, 190-pounder, is making a name for himself for the Matadors in football and baseball. Hayward 48, Tennyson 12

The Farmers’ winning streak continued on Friday night, as they defeated visiting Tennyson to improve to 3-0. Senior quarterback Kennedy Braziel threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for one. WR Emmanuel Sega scored on a 96-yard catch, and teammate Maurice Hall had 106 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Mateaki Paongo, a junior running back, rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown, and Jordyn Wilson, another backfield mate, rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown. For the second week in a row, junior Isaiah Galli returned an interception for a touchdown, this time returning an errant pass 101 yards. Next Friday, Hayward travels to Montgomery-Santa Rosa, while Tennyson (0-3) faces Oakland Tech at home. — Dycus, Joseph

Las Lomas 27, Tamalpais 26, OT

In overtime, Kaden Lagaya scored on a 3-yard run, and Las Lomas stopped Tamalpais’ 2-point conversion attempt to seal the one-point victory. The game was tight the entire time. Las Lomas led 7-6 at halftime, the Red Tailed Hawks led 14-13 after three quarters, and the game was tied 20-20 at the end of regulation. Lagaya’s short run in overtime and Daniel Soccol’s PAT put the Knights up 27-20, but Tamalpais responded with a touchdown to pull within a point. The visitors went for the win, but Las Lomas held on to improve to 2-0. Tamalpais leads the series 2-1. Lagaya also scored on a 9-yard run in the second quarter, and QB Dylan Thomas scored twice. The first was a 9-yard pass to Roman Mercado, which put Las Lomas ahead 7-6 after Soccol’s PAT, and Thomas added a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. – Michael Lefkow

Oakland defeats Galileo-San Francisco 44-0

The Wildcats went three seasons without a win, but all Oakland seems to be able to do now is win. Rah’shaan Buffin, the quarterback, ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns, threw for 106 yards and one touchdown, and forced a fumble. Travis Williams had a sack and four tackles in addition to returning the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Amiliohn Brown had eight carries for 56 yards, but his most significant contributions came on defense. He had two fumble recoveries and returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown. Peninsula/South Bay

Alisal 27, Sequoia 21

Sequoia scored on a 75-yard fumble return by MLB TJ Talisa, a 43-yard pass from Shawn Royer, and a 53-yard run by Logan Kern, but fell short against the Salinas visitors. “Overall, it was an uneven performance with a chance to win at the end,” said Sequoia coach Rob Poulos. Aragon 28, Lincoln-San Jose 6

Aragon (2-1) led 14-0 at halftime thanks to rushing touchdowns by Spencer Unga, Ivan Nisa, Marcus Gosch, and Sean Hickey. The Dons’ defensive standout was Amaziah Tanielu. “We’re lucky to have caught Lincoln when we did,” Aragon coach Steve Sell said. “They’re really young, but they’ll get better.” Aragon hosts Carlmont on Friday, while Lincoln hosts Westmont. Branham led 6-6 at halftime before exploding for 21 points in the third and 27 points in the fourth quarter. Jack Lewis threw for 353 yards and five touchdowns on 16 of 22 attempts. As the Bruins amassed 674 yards of total offense, Elias Antillion carried 15 times for 168 yards and one touchdown. Preston Conrad caught two of Lewis’ touchdown passes, while the other three went to Brayden Hodges, Sebastian Golden, and Antillion. Francis Mone and Kodi Fowler each had three sacks. Senior Arvin Hosseini’s determined effort on Thursday helped the Pioneers earn their first victory of the season. On six carries, Hosseini rushed for 69 yards and three touchdowns. Shen Hernandez-Ong, the senior quarterback, completed 5 of 6 passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns, with seniors Jaidyn Sinclair and James Xue each catching a touchdown. Cupertino rushed for 285 yards, with Hernandez-Ong adding 91 yards and a touchdown. Senior Eashan Chatterjee added 62 yards and a touchdown. Half Moon Bay 26, Carlmont 12

Half Moon Bay needed a steady running game to get back on track after two blowout losses to start the season. Junior RB Connor Heath rushed for a two-yard touchdown on his 44th carry, and junior QB Dusty Dimas threw for three touchdowns. Junior Kenji Holcomb had two touchdown receptions, and Nolan Mullins had one. Carlmont’s Sean Chopoff scored on an interception return, and senior running back Braeden Kumer also scored. Hillsdale 28, Woodside 12

Hillsdale (3-0) defeated Woodside (2-1) with Erick Waugh completing 19 of 31 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns. Dante Allendorf gained 133 yards on the ground (15 times for 54 yards) and caught two passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Kyle King had six receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown. Mountain View 40, Leigh 21

Kevin Conway completed 17 of 26 passes for 283 yards, including 261 in the first half, to lead Mountain View to its first victory since the mother of one of its seniors died on Aug. 30. Mountain View improved to 2-1 after Conway passed for four touchdowns, ran for another, and passed for a two-point conversion. Leigh fell to 2-1. The full story can be found here by David Kiefer.

Overfelt 38, Leland 21

On Thursday, Overfelt led 20-0 midway through the second quarter thanks to a dominant running game and a tenacious pass rush. John Stowers, a San Jose State commit, rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while also recording 15 tackles, two sacks, and an interception returned for a touchdown. Daron Hall rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown, and senior quarterback Gabriel Martinez completed 8 of 12 passes for 146 yards. He scored two touchdowns. The offensive line “took over” the game, according to coach Carlo Maningo. Taylor Gordon caught a touchdown and Isia Smith had 102 yards receiving. Santa Clara 47, Del Mar 34

Nelson Gifford earned his first victory as Santa Clara’s coach on Friday, with Joseph Manueli rushing for two touchdowns and Matt Nguyen rushing for eight, fifteen, and 42 yards. Alex Lopez also scored a touchdown on the ground. Santa Clara’s final touchdown came on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Matthew Conklin to wide receiver Jeremiah Karongo. Del Mar’s Andre Latimore did it all, rushing for over 183 yards and three touchdowns and passing for 142 yards and two more. Del Mar coach Robert Chapman said WR Jake Schwoob surpassed 100 yards receiving and caught a three-yard touchdown. Del Mar’s Miguel Medina also scored from five yards out. Silver Creek 49, San Jose 6

Silver Creek finished its non-league schedule with a lopsided win on Thursday. At halftime, the Raiders led 35-0. Ten different players rushed for 280 yards. For the second week in a row, the Bulldogs scored 40 points, with junior Johnothan Cruz’s two interceptions helping Sobrato pull away on the road Thursday. At halftime, Sobrato led 20-14. RB Noah Taylor scored from 50 and 40 yards after gaining nearly 300 yards the previous week. Ray Perez, a junior quarterback, threw three touchdown passes, two to junior Ryan Hankins and one to Alex Kushchanka, while also rushing for one.
