The 6 best movies to watch on Netflix in November

Brendan Fraser in “The Whale.

Here are the best movies on Netflix in November.

“Maid in Manhattan” (November 1)

Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes in “Maid in Manhattan.”

If you need peak J.Lo rom-com you can’t go wrong with this one.

Jennifer Lopez plays a single mother who works at a swanky hotel in Manhattan. There, she catches the eye of a politician (Ralph Fiennes), and a modern-day Cinderella story follows as Lopez is thrust from rags to riches.

“Sixteen Candles” (November 1)

Molly Ringwald in “Sixteen Candles.”

This John Hughes classic brought the high school coming-of-age genre to heights it had never seen before thanks to Hughes’ use of comedy, likable actors (notably Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall), and an understanding of teenage complexities as we follow the day in the life of Sam (Ringwald) as she turns 16.

“Superbad” (November 1)

(L-R) Jonah Hill and Michael Cera in “Superbad.”

Need a high school story that’s a little more modern? This comedy stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as two high school seniors who plan to go out in a blaze of glory by partying hard and losing their virginity as they kiss high school goodbye.

That turns out to be harder than they thought, leading to fights, a police chase, and the most legendary name ever used on a fake ID, “McLovin.”

“The Whale” (November 1)

Brendan Fraser as Charlie in “The Whale.”

Brendan Fraser won an Oscar for his performance as Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher who desperately tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Silk).

And let’s not leave out Hong Chau who puts in a powerful performance as Liz, the nurse of Charlie and also his only friend.

“Whiplash” (November 1)

(L-R) Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons in “Whiplash.”

The lifeblood of Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed drama is the performances by Miles Teller as an ambitious jazz drummer student and J.K. Simmons as his tyrannical instructor.

The evolution of both characters highlights Chazelle’s talents as a storyteller and the skills of both Teller, whose performance is still one of his career-bests, and Simmons, who earned an Oscar for his work.

“Focus” (November 10)

Will Smith and Margot Robbie in “Focus.”

This clever crime drama stars Will Smith as a top-flight grifter who takes an aspiring thief, played by Margot Robbie, under his wing.

Along with watching the flirty back-and-forth by the stars, Smith is perfect in this always-one-step-ahead character.
