Bay Area high school football: Riordan freshman Isi Tuugamusu runs for five touchdowns

No. 7 Riordan 41, No. 12 St. Ignatius 34

In a five-touchdown day that saw multiple lead changes, Archbishop Riordan freshman running back Isi Tuugamusu bowled over San Francisco rival St. Ignatius on Saturday.

St. Ignatius junior Odhran Kenny kicked a 45-yard field goal to start the scoring, but Riordan’s Tuugamusu responded with a two-yard touchdown run with 3:22 left in the first quarter to give the home team the lead.

Jarious Hogan scored two touchdowns for St. Ignatius before the end of the first quarter, one rushing and one receiving. St. Ignatius led 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Riordan rallied as the Mike Mitchell Jr.-led passing attack carved up the SI defense on long scoring drives. Tuugamusu’s three-yard and one-yard touchdown runs put Riordan up 21-17 at the half.

After halftime, St. Ignatius forced a turnover on outside linebacker Daniel Leupold’s strip-sack, and Hogan powered in from one yard out for his third touchdown of the day with 7:50 left in the third quarter to give the visitors a 24-21 lead.

Riordan retook the lead, 28-24, with 4:06 left in the third on a one-yard touchdown by Tuugamusu, and another field goal by Kenny cut the Crusaders’ lead to 28-27.

Riordan took command in the fourth quarter.

Tuugamusu scored his fifth touchdown of the game with 11:49 remaining, and Mitchell followed with a 23-yard pass to Chris Lawson to make the score 41-27.

SI quarterback Brandon Mann, a sophomore, threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Quinn Folk with three minutes remaining to cut the deficit to 41-34. However, the onside kick was unsuccessful, and the Crusaders ran out of time.

Riordan (3-1) will host Valley Christian next Saturday, while St. Ignatius (2-2) will host Bellarmine on Friday.

Moreau Catholic won by a score of 23 to 21.

Jadon Redd clinched Moreau’s victory in a non-league game that came down to the wire when he made a tackle to prevent a two-point conversion that would have tied the score. “It was a great game played by both teams,” Moreau coach Keith Minor texted. Moreau avenged a 14-10 playoff loss to Salesian last season with the win. In this one, Peyton Collins scored twice and returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown, setting up Jeremiah Charles’ quarterback sneak. Moreau’s front seven was led by Miles Moore, Lance Mitchell, and Andrew Placido. Seth Evans intercepted a pass, and Julio Ramos converted a 30-yard field goal for the game-winning points. Moreau (2-3) is off the following week before hosting Castro Valley in the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division opener on Oct. 6. Bethel 29, Vallejo 12

Vallejo quarterback Jasier Smith’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Sedrick Vaughn early in the third quarter helped the team rally from a 12-7 halftime deficit. Kevin Pettis scored from 15 yards out, and Vaughn capped the scoring with a 35-yard run. On Friday, Vallejo (3-2) will host Acalanes. Ygnacio Valley 8, Galileo-San Francisco 20.

The 28-game losing streak for Ygnacio Valley has included some tough losses, but few have been as frustrating as Saturday’s loss at Galileo-San Francisco. Rae Jackson, the Wolves’ coach, said the team had five trips inside the 10-yard line and only scored once. In the second quarter, sophomore running back Romel Mariano scored on a three-yard run. Arroyo 8 and Piedmont 36

Piedmont’s outstanding season continued as the Highlanders improved to 3-2 in their fifth road game of the season. Junior quarterback Markos Lagios ran for 96 yards and threw for another. Running back Tommy Ashton and junior Sam Shelby both scored on the ground. Cash Elmquist, a junior tight end, scored a touchdown. After a bye week, Piedmont plays at Alameda on Oct. 7, and Arroyo (1-4) plays at Kennedy-Fremont on Friday. – Dycus, Joseph
