Prep volleyball roundup: Miramonte and Hayward rally, Harker, Live Oak and Pittsburg sweep
No. 10 Notre Dame-Belmont 3, Notre Dame-San Jose 0
On the same day it entered the Bay Area News Group rankings, the Belmont school won the battle of Notre Dames, 25-17, 25-13, 25-21.
Gia Rivera had 16 kills, nine digs, and two aces, while Jessica Ai had 37 assists and five aces. Karly Bordin had nine kills and 12 digs, while Adrianna Agresti had 18 digs and two aces.
Notre Dame-Belmont has had a fantastic September, defeating ranked teams in Palo Alto and Sacred Heart Prep. NDB also defeated 14-3 Santa Cruz 2-1 in a tournament and last week lost a close 3-2 decision to 20-4 Folsom.
No. 9 Burlingame 3, San Mateo 0
Burlingame swept San Mateo (25-15, 25-16, 25-14) for the second time in a week, improving to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the PAL Bay Division. Morgan Toomey, a senior outside hitter, had three aces, junior Ella Duong had eight kills, and sophomore Ava Scatena had five kills as the Panthers won their tenth game in a row.
No. 11 San Ramon Valley 3, Granada 1
After losing two straight games to St. Francis and Archbishop Mitty, the Wolves have won three straight East Bay Athletic League games. SRV defeated Granada 25-12, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17 on Tuesday night.
Junior outside hitter Lucy Chertock had 20 kills, two aces, and 14 digs, while senior Maddie Connelly had 10 kills and two blocks. Audree Vasconi, the setter, had 34 assists and seven digs. The Wolves are now 14-4 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Branham 3, Evergreen Valley 0
Branham improved to 5-0 in league play and ended a three-match losing streak at Evergreen Valley with a 25-10, 25-15, 25-8 victory. Giselle Paedon led the way with 12 kills, followed by Andra Enache with seven and Brianna Dalzochio with five.
Enache also had three aces, while Rebecca Sung and CC Bonnard each had two. Sung had three blocks, matching Dalzochio’s total for the 11-6 Bruins.
Campolindo 3, Northgate 1
Campolindo defeated Northgate 25-10, 25-11, 26-28, 25-19 to return to.500 and improve to 6-0 in Diablo Athletic League play.
Setter senior Rachel Andre played the entire game and led the Cougars with 12 digs. Hanna Bjornson, a senior, had 21 kills and 13 digs, and Mia Wallach, another outside hitter, had 14 kills, six aces, and 13 digs. Campolindo won with five aces from Kate Brown and six kills from sophomore middle blocker Ava Rogers in the fourth set to improve to 11-11.
Northgate also had several athletes who performed admirably. Fea’o Saluni led the team with five kills, three solo blocks, and an assist. Mina Ismen and Siera Pence combined for 16 kills, while Jacke Lee had six kills and a block.
Miramonte 3, Acalanes 1
Miramonte won the next three games after losing the first set to Acalanes, winning 12-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 to tie Acalanes in the DAL standings at 4-2.
Sena Hens, the Matadors’ outside hitter, had 11 kills, and Amanda Roach and Sadie Symonds each had four. Maddie Yun led the team with 12 assists, and senior libero Nicole Tuszynski led all passers with a 2.2 serve-receive percentage, according to coach Leslie Ray.
Capuchino 3, South San Francisco 0
Capuchino defeated South San Francisco in straight sets, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23, with team captain Alessia Perez “holding down the fort with great settings, servings, and dumping,” according to coach Allen Lau. He credited middle hitter Arianna Moreno and OH Maya Canas, as well as freshman Alexa Tajeldin, with “a number of kills that helped the team out a lot.”
South San Francisco had some standout performers as well. Nevaeh Davidson led the team with five kills, Audrina Lopez had 20 service receptions, and Aryana McCormick had four blocks.
Pittsburg 3, Heritage 0
The Pirates defeated Heritage 25-16, 25-20, 25-17 in a Bay Valley Athletic League match. Niamiah Moreno, a junior outside hitter, led Pittsburg with 10 kills and five aces. Senior setter Kieli Fox had nine assists and 13 digs, while Ashlynn Kondra had three aces and three blocks. Diana Willingham led the Pirates with 10 assists, while Malia Fonongaloa had five kills and four digs.
Aragon 3, Sequoia 0
Aragon won its third game in a row and improved to 5-1 in PAL Bay play with a sweep of Sequoia. Sophie Rubinstein led the team with 17 kills, while Kathleen Suayan had 17 digs. Hunter Kwan provided 20 assists to teammates as the Dons won their fifth straight league game. Later this week, Aragon will take on ranked Burlingame.
Saratoga 3, Santa Clara 1
Saratoga defeated a tenacious Santa Clara team in four sets (25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14). Santa Clara coach Martina Carrillo reported that sophomore Naomi Hunt had eight kills and four aces, and junior Dania Gizaw had eight kills and five aces as well. Evonne Bergman, a junior, had three kills and two aces.
Hill 3, Live Oak 0
Coach Tait Rafat said his team relied on five senior starters to defeat Hill 25-19, 25-19, and 25-17. Live Oak improved to 6-3 thanks to outside hitters Ana Saulala and Anna Guenet, as well as setter Maya Rafat, MB Mara DeFrancisco, and liberó Chiara Rocchio. He also stated that Live Oak’s second BVAL victory was aided by sophomore Ava Chapman and freshman Brooke Ledwith.
Hayward 3, San Lorenzo 2
The Farmers trailed by two sets at one point before rallying for the thrilling win to get back to.500. “The entire team bound together to get the job done,” said coach Alisa Parsons. While there were a few standouts, this was clearly a team effort.”
In her first varsity game, Kailee Dela Cruz made key passes, and freshman Breanna Lamas had several huge digs to keep Hayward alive. In the third game, outside hitter Makayla Asoy moved to setter, which Parsons said gave the team new energy.
Senior Emi Licea was a steady force in the middle with digs, aces, and kills, and fellow seniors Rosalynn Jimenez and Evalynn Jimenez were both consistent with kills and blocks.
Harker 3, The King’s Academy 0
Harker earned its eighth victory of the season with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 victory over The King’s Academy. Keira Chang led the way with 12 assists, and Brooke Kubose came in second with nine. Six aces were served by junior libero Norah Mehanna. In an all-around win for the Eagles, Divya Bhupathi had eight kills and Juhi Madala had nine.
