High school football roundup: Riordan QB sets WCAL passing record
Saturday’s games: Riordan’s Michael Mitchell Jr. throws six TD passes in victory over Valley Christian. Menlo’s Mikey McGrath helps undefeated Knights roll past Homestead.
Archbishop Riordan set yet another record in this game.
Sophomore quarterback Michael Mitchell Jr. threw six touchdown passes as the host Crusaders defeated previously undefeated Valley Christian, ranked fifth by the Bay Area News Group, 42-17 on Saturday.
Mitchell broke the West Catholic Athletic League and school records for touchdown passes in a game just one week after freshman Isitolo Tuugamusu tied the league record with five.
All of this adds up to a memorable start to the league schedule for seventh-ranked Riordan, which is tied with Serra atop the WCAL standings after two weeks.
Mitchell connected with Cynai Thomas on touchdown passes of 48 and 65 yards. He connected with Chris Lawson on a 25-yard touchdown pass and Judge Nash on a 26-yard scoring pass.
Thomas and Nash, like Mitchell, are sophomores. Lawson is a sophomore.
Mitchell also threw touchdown passes to seniors Tony Manu and Tyrone Jackson.
Riordan (4-1, 2-0) dominated statistically in the first quarter and led 14-0 after Lawson and Manu scored.
Valley (4-1, 1-0) responded with touchdowns less than two minutes apart, as Joseph Stephens threw TD passes of 18 yards to Justice Matthews and 14 yards to Jerod White, tying the game at 14-14.
Mitchell’s 48-yard pass to Thomas put the Crusaders up 21-14 at halftime.
Riordan will face Bellarmine at San Jose City College on Friday, while Valley Christian will return to San Francisco to face Sacred Heart Cathedral at Kezar Stadium.
Menlo School No. 22, Homestead No. 22
Mikey McGrath and company had a big day as Menlo rolled at home against Homestead in the Peninsula Athletic League De Anza Division opener.
To help the Knights improve to 5-0, the senior threw touchdown passes to Jack Enright, Brady Jung, Bradford Tudor, and Nick Scacco.
Homestead is now 1-4.
Menlo led 20-0 after one quarter and 34-14 at the half. After three quarters, the Knights’ lead had grown to 48-14.
