CIF announces state coach of the year candidates in all sports
Candidates include nominees from across the CCS, NCS and Oakland Section
Mills girls basketball coach Dave Matsu, who died this month one week after suffering a stroke, was one of dozens of Bay Area coaches nominated for the NFHS California State Coach of the Year award for the 2022-23 school year by the California Interscholastic Federation.
“The CIF would like to thank and honor these well-deserving coaches for their commitment to education-based athletics and the student-athletes of California,” said CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti in a statement.
Menlo School boys track and field coach Jorge Chen, Fremont-Sunnyave boys wrestling coach Erik Duus, Los Altos softball coach Robert Herrera, Milpitas football coach Kelly King, Priory girls lacrosse coach Jen Lee, Wilcox girls volleyball coach April Lujan, Los Altos girls cross country coach Stephanie MacKenzie, Mills girls basketball coach Dave Matsu, Mountain View boys soccer coach Jim McGuirk, Archbishop Mitty girls volleyball coach April Lujan,
Moreau Catholic boys volleyball coach Jerico Abanico, Richmond soccer coach Rene Siles, St. Mary’s-Berkeley football coach John Trotman, and Vallejo boys track and field coach Mike Wilson are among the candidates in the North Coast section.
McClymonds boys basketball coach Barry Bell, girls volleyball coach Lisa Busbee-Young, and football coach Michael Peters, Oakland Tech girls track and field coach Antonia Currington and girls soccer coach Amerin Falk, Skyline girls golf coach James Salazar and girls tennis coach Michelle Xia, Oakland boys soccer coach Miguel Hernandez, and Fremont-Oakland spirit coach Lisa Brew are among the candidates in the Oakland section.
