Hundreds of apartments may sprout at San Jose site of old DMV office
Developer aims to use fast-track gambit for project proposal
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The closure of a DMV office in San Jose could pave the way for the construction of hundreds of homes on the site, which is close to Kelley Park and Spartan Stadium.
According to a preliminary proposal filed with San Jose city planners, the preliminary proposal envisions multiple residential buildings containing well over 300 apartments.
The housing development would be built at 2222 Senter Road, which is also the location of a DMV office that was closed by the state government in September.
According to the preliminary proposal at San Jose City Hall, the project would include 372 apartments housed in three buildings.
The development was proposed by HC Investment Associates, which also owns the property.
The developer indicated in the filing that it intends to use SB 330 provisions to help streamline the approval process and reduce the likelihood that the city will use obstacles to stymie the development proposal.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the developer would use a builder’s remedy gambit, which also streamlines the approval process, but sometimes in an adversarial legal proceeding.
According to state government business records, HC Investment Associates is led by Vicky Kwoh Ching and Wu-Chung Hsiang.
The ownership entity is based at a $9.7 million Palo Alto single-family home, according to Redfin.
