McClymonds celebrates retiring coach Michael Peters with Silver Bowl victory
Oakland Athletic League championship: McClymonds shuts out its sixth consecutive Oakland Athletic League opponent to clinch NorCal trip.
OAKLAND, Calif. — The celebration of longtime coach Michael Peters’ career at McClymonds High School began long before the Warriors won their 13th consecutive Silver Bowl with a 56-0 victory over Oakland Tech on Saturday night.
The entire day, beginning with girls flag football playoffs and championships in the early afternoon, was an opportunity for visitors and well-wishers to congratulate the man who has won four state titles, six NorCal crowns, and 11 section championships with the Oakland school.
Peters, 55, announced his retirement from the league two weeks ago.
“I got a chance to coach at the school where I went to school, and luckily we had a great time,” said Peters, who graduated from McClymonds in 1986 and began his coaching career as an assistant at Mack in 1992. “I couldn’t have asked for more.” I had a fantastic team of coaches and kids.”
A slew of former players and coaches dotted the sidelines and stands, many of whom greeted Peters warmly as he went about his pregame routine.
“That was huge for me, seeing the guys that I started coaching with,” said Peters.
The game was supposed to be played at a neutral location at first. However, after Skyline forfeited its playoff game at McClymonds, the section agreed to let the Warriors host the championship to provide Peters with one more home game against an Oakland opponent. After Castlemont forfeited, Oakland Tech advanced to the Silver Bowl.
McClymonds won its section by outscoring opponents 251-0 in five running clock wins, and Oakland Tech, which lost 40-0 in the regular season, did not fare any better in the rematch.
As McClymonds cruised to another easy victory over an Oakland Athletic League opponent, Redmani Albert scored four touchdowns and teammate Tajir Golden ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception to the house.
Michael Peters has never lost to an Oakland Athletic League opponent in his head coaching career.
On Sunday, McClymonds will learn who its NorCal opponent will be.
And it was clear on Saturday evening that winning another section or even regional title would not be enough for the McClymonds players.
They want to send Peters off with a fifth state title.
“That would be huge. “He has a legacy here,” said league MVP Albert. “We want to send him off strong.”
