An alpine ski village in Oakland? This brewery has undergone a total transformation
“Our goal is to bring aprés-ski vibes to the city,” says the folks at Temescal Brewing.
Oakland’s highest peak in the hills measures about 1,760 feet, so there isn’t much opportunity to ski on its slopes. But now you can feel like you’re on a ski vacation, thanks to an Oakland brewery that has been transformed into a cheery alpine lodge.
Temescal Brewing opened its doors this weekend as the “No Jerks Ski Village,” an ersatz ski lodge that will be open until next February. (If you’re wondering about the name, it comes from the brewery’s slogan, “Fresh beer, no jerks.”) According to brewery cofounder Dvorit Mausner, it’s a “complete transformation and worth checking out.” “Our goal is to bring après-ski vibes to the city.”
Visitors enter a warm interior stocked with ski paraphernalia and hanging Christmas presents after passing through a ski-check station. There’s a heated outdoor tent with hundreds of floating snowballs and a mistletoe nook decked out with 2,000-plus shiny gift-wrap bows for Instagram.
A glowing hearth connects the vibe, but you can still gather around it with wintry drinks like mulled beer toddies with apple cider, cinnamon, and orange slices, nonalcoholic flaming cocoa, and “shotskis” to be chugged off of a wooden ski. Seasonal beers such as the winter-spiced ale Cozy, a triple IPA called Follow the Snow, and a black lager called Coal are also available.
Themed outfits are encouraged, so if you have some fleece or goggles sitting in your closet, now is the time to show them off. (Thermal underwear is probably overkill.)
For $50, beer enthusiasts can purchase a No Jerks Ski Village Season Pass, which includes a lanyard and personalized ID card and entitles them to discounts and free rounds.
