Former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney said he will vote for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election
The 83-year-old released a Friday statement officially endorsing Vice President Harris.
“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney wrote. “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him.”
“He can never be trusted with power again,” Cheney added.
The former VP’s statement comes hours after his daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney, said the elder Cheney would be voting for Harris.
“Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Cheney said at The Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.
Cheney, who served with President George W. Bush from 2001-2009, endorsed Trump in 2016, though he has condemned him since the January 6 assault on the US Capitol.
The younger Cheney has waged a years-long crusade against Trump since January 6, 2021. A former rising star in the GOP, she was ousted from her position as the third highest-ranking Republican in the House as a result of her criticism of Trump. She later lost reelection to a Trump-backed primary challenger in 2022.
Liz Cheney announced earlier this week that she would be supporting Harris herself.
“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this,” Cheney said. “And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I am voting for Kamala Harris.”
On Friday, Liz Cheney said that she would be supporting other “serious people” in races across the country, including Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, who is running against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas.
“We need people who are going to serve in good faith, we need people who are honorable public servants, and in this race, that is Colin Allred,” Cheney said. “So I’ll be working on his behalf.”
