Inmate found dead in his cell at Redwood City jail — the second death in two days

The cause of death is still under investigation, but presumed to be suicide

Redwood City, California — On Saturday night, a 34-year-old Maguire Correctional Facility inmate was discovered dead after a suspected suicide, though investigations into the cause of death are still ongoing.

It was the second death at the Redwood City jail in two days, following the death of a 64-year-old man in his cell on Friday afternoon.

The 34-year-old was placed in the facility’s behavioral health unit, which offers support and services to people suffering from mental illnesses.

According to a statement from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, correctional officers discovered the individual unresponsive in his cell at approximately 9:18 p.m. Saturday during a regular hourly check-in. According to the statement, the man was immediately given life-saving assistance until medical personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead shortly after by the Redwood City Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services.

The sheriff’s office, district attorney’s office, and coroner’s office in San Mateo County are all looking into the man’s death. Officials will reveal his identity once his identity has been confirmed and his next of kin have been notified.

“At this time, initial information suggests the cause of death to be suicide but final determination will be made by the Coroner’s Office once they have completed their exam and investigation,” the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Though the 64-year-old inmate’s death is still under investigation, preliminary evidence suggests he died of natural causes, according to a statement from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
