Man killed on Richmond freeway running from multi-vehicle crash
The man died on I-580 Wednesday night after he was hit by three vehicles
RICHMOND, VA. — The California Highway Patrol said Thursday that a man who was running across Interstate 580 after his vehicle was involved in another crash died after being hit by three other vehicles.
The man’s identity has yet to be determined.
The fatality occurred around 10:25 p.m. Wednesday in the freeway’s westbound lanes near Central Avenue.
According to the CHP, the man was involved in a five-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes. In that incident, one person was injured.
The unidentified man got out of his car and ran into the westbound lanes, where he was hit by one vehicle, then two more, according to CHP Officer Adib Zeid.
He was killed on the highway.
The drivers who hit the man, as well as those involved in the crash in the eastbound lanes, all remained at the scene, according to Zeid.
For about 30 minutes, all lanes of I-580 in both directions were closed while officers investigated and cleaned up the area.
