NFL’s RedZone channel will be available for streaming. But it’s going to cost you
The popular cable channel NFL RedZone, which shows every scoring play from the league’s Sunday afternoon games, is coming to a streaming device near you.
The NFL announced in August that the RedZone channel would be available in the more expensive version of NFL+, the subscription-based streaming service it launched last year. The NFL Network channel will be available to stream on the lower-cost NFL+ service.
The new features come with significant price increases for the upcoming season.
Last year, the NFL launched NFL+ for $4.99 per month. The NFL Network has joined the service, which includes streaming of local market games and nationally televised prime time contests, and the price has been reduced to $6.99. A full season will cost $49, up from $39 the previous year.
RedZone will be added to NFL+ Premium, which will be increased from $9.99 to $14.99 per month, a 50% increase. The cost of a full season will increase from $79.99 to $99.99. NFL+ Premium includes all of the benefits of NFL+ plus commercial-free game replays and Coaches Film.
Consumers could watch NFL local games and national telecasts for free on Yahoo Sports and the NFL mobile app two years ago.
In order to make streaming platforms profitable, media companies are increasingly increasing their prices. The Walt Disney Company has announced a price increase of more than 20% for its streaming services Hulu and Disney+.
The NFL has not disclosed the number of NFL+ subscriptions sold during the service’s first year. The league believes that the addition of RedZone and NFL Network will increase the product’s appeal to subscribers.
In an 11-year agreement, the NFL remains committed to showing the majority of its games on traditional TV networks. However, the league is looking into ways to expand its digital offerings as they become the preferred viewing platforms for younger consumers who do not have pay-TV subscriptions.
The NFL’s agreement with Amazon to show “Thursday Night Football” on Prime Video is in its second year. Beginning this year, Prime Video will have exclusive rights to a new annual Black Friday game that will be aired the day after Thanksgiving. The NFL’s Sunday Ticket package, which gives subscribers access to every out-of-market game, will be available on YouTube TV this year after previously being available only to DirecTV customers.
