One killed, one badly injured in fiery Oakland freeway collision
Both victims had to be extricated from their vehicles, one of which caught fire
OAKLAND, Calif. — Authorities said one woman was killed and another was seriously injured in a fiery two-vehicle collision on an Oakland freeway Tuesday morning.
Authorities did not immediately release the name of the woman killed, who was 44 years old.
The collision occurred around 11 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 580 east of Fruitvale Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to the CHP, it involved a Chevrolet Volt driven by the 44-year-old woman and a Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV driven by another woman. According to CHP Officer Adib Zeid, they were the only people in the vehicles.
Following the collision, the car came to a halt in the center divider. According to the CHP, the SUV came to a stop on the right shoulder and caught fire, with flames spreading to nearby vegetation.
Both women were extricated from their vehicles and the fires were extinguished by Oakland firefighters.
Both women were taken to the hospital, where one of them died. The other woman’s condition was unknown Tuesday afternoon.
At 11:16 a.m., all eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed, and a SigAlert was issued. According to the CHP, two lanes were reopened within 45 minutes and all lanes were reopened by 1 p.m.
