Bay Area high school basketball: O’Dowd boys and girls win at school’s Thanksgiving Showcase
Boys basketball
No. 14 Moreau Catholic 56, Vanden-Fairfield 52
Kevin Chapman was named game MVP after scoring 18 points and dishing out eight assists to lead Moreau to a season-opening win over Vanden at the O’Dowd Thanksgiving Showcase. Tyler Bailey added 12 points and Spencer Shonnard added ten for the Mariners.
Bishop O’Dowd (No. 11) defeated Oakland (No. 8).
At O’Dowd’s own Thanksgiving Showcase, O’Dowd upset crosstown rival and defending Division III state champion Oakland. The Dragons’ backcourt was dominant, with senior Tobias Allen scoring 14 points and junior Joshua Green scoring 16.
No. 18 Oakland Tech defeated Grant-Sacramento 60-60.
ArDarius Grayson led Oakland Tech to a victory over a Sacramento-area team at the Bishop O’Dowd Thanksgiving Showcase with 23 points and five rebounds. Forward Ahmed Gulaid had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jerrell Warren had nine. For the Bulldogs, 6-7 center Xan Myer-Plettner had seven points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Sheldon-Sacramento has 56 points, while Dougherty Valley has 46.
Dougherty Valley faded late in the Bishop O’Dowd Showcase, giving up a 23-16 halftime lead. Dougherty was led by Andrew Degirolamo, who scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds, and Jayden Doty, who scored 11 points. Ankit Anand, a sophomore, led Dougherty Valley with six points.
Girls basketball
No. 4 Bishop O’Dowd (56 points), No. 17 Heritage (36 points).
In Bishop O’Dowd’s season-opening rout of ranked Heritage, Devin Cosgriff had a team-high 15 points. The Dragons pulled away from the defending Bay Valley champions thanks to a huge third quarter in which they scored 22 points. For O’Dowd, senior Nyah Greenwood had 11 points and Savannah Jones had nine. Heritage was led by freshman Ze’Ni Patterson, who scored 10 points.
Archbishop Riordan is 61, and Redwood-Larkspur is 43.
Riordan trailed by eight points midway through the third quarter, but won the game by scoring 23 of the game’s final 30 points. Riordan’s senior guard Ashanti Dias had a game-high 23 points, and Teagan Radcliffe and Tailiyah Nasol each had 10 points. For the Crusaders, post player Zion McGuire had seven points and four blocks. Anaru Todd, a Redwood guard, led her team with 17 points.
Cornerstone Christian has 48 points, while Liberty has 45.
Zakara Cooper started her season with a 28-point performance against Liberty. Mecca Alexander, who has a scholarship offer from San Jose State, led the team with 11 points and four steals. Six-foot-four post Liberty’s Lea Salinas Beamen scored nine points, and the Lions’ Madison Perea had a team-high 11 points.
