Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s Fright Fest takes aim at your worst phobias
Discovery Kingdom’s annual haunt gets underway this weekend
Hundreds of dry cornstalks rustled in the wind on Wednesday as workers completed the final push to transform Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo into Fright Fest, one of Northern California’s premier haunted attractions.
The park after dark is not for the faint of heart, with five scare houses and five walk-through scare zones. Kids Boo Fest, with Halloween fun for the little ghouls and ghosts including a kid’s foam party, and Oktoberfest, with an array of German fare and lively entertainment, are two daytime activities for all ages. As the sun sets, the monsters are “Unleashed” in a new show that is included with Fright Fest admission and is recommended for those aged 13 and up.
“We are incredibly excited to unleash a Fright Fest event that leads the way in bringing terrifying scares for our guests,” said Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Park General Manager Kirk Smith. “Six Flags is all about making fun and exciting memories while providing an exceptional guest experience, and this year’s Fright Fest will be no exception.” When you combine the daytime family-friendly offering of Kids Boo Fest with the special food, beverage, and entertainment options of Oktoberfest, there won’t be a better place to celebrate autumn in Northern California.”
This year, Fright Fest is attempting something new with Club Fear in 3D. For an additional fee, thrill seekers can don 3D glasses and confront their fears in a nightmare haunted attraction.
Malyssa Williams, who usually works with the Looney Toons characters, was busy putting the finishing touches on Club Fear. CarnEvil, a traveling backwoods carnival in desperate need of fresh meat for its circus of horrors, was her favorite haunt in the park.
Marc Merino, Marketing and Public Relations Manager, agreed with Williams.
“There’s something about the creepy clowns under the big top that is really well done,” Merino said.
Ladders flanked the two castle-like towers flanking the entrance to Midnight Mansion, which was adorned with a massive glowing skull. Grimmlee Mansion has been built on the site of the former walrus enclosure. “Mourning the death of his beloved wife, tortured Professor Silas Grimmlee decides to dabble in the dark arts to raise her back from the dead, but also summons a menagerie of macabre monstrosities from the beyond,” according to the haunts’ lore.
There are five walk-through scare zones spread throughout Discovery Kingdom for those who are not brave enough to enter the terrifying haunts. Murder Mill, Weeping Wharf, and Corpse Crossing have joined Dead Man’s Party and the Slasher Circus in thoroughly creeping out the park’s paths.
With the exception of valid Season Passholders, Fright Fest is a special ticketed event that requires a separate ticket for admission.
