Two women were found seriously wounded near Homestead High School; suspected gunman eluded police then was found in wooded area outside West Valley
SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Authorities said a woman was killed and another was seriously injured in a shooting early Monday, and the man suspected of shooting them was later found dead from an apparent suicide following a police chase.
According to a department news release, officers from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety were called to a home on Karameos Drive, just west of Homestead High School, at 5:28 a.m. for a report of gunshots.
They discovered two women in a car with gunshot wounds; one died at the scene, while the other was taken to the hospital. Officers near the crime scene spotted a vehicle they suspected was involved in the shooting and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped away, according to police.
The pursuit led to Cupertino, but Sunnyvale officers “discontinued the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle.”
The vehicle was discovered in a heavily wooded area off Stevens Canyon Road, west of Redwood Gulch Road, near the Saratoga Gap Open Space Preserve, by Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies on patrol in the area around 6:20 a.m.
Deputies discovered the shooting suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
Authorities stated that the suspect and victims knew each other and that there was no ongoing safety threat, and that no one else is currently being investigated in connection with the shooting.
Additional information was not made available Monday afternoon. Detective Eugene Rosette can be reached at 408-730-7110 if anyone has information that can help investigators.
