Suspected Bay Area car thief impaled on fence

Stolen vehicle’s passenger eluded arrest, Vallejo police say

Authorities said a man fleeing Vallejo police impaled his leg while attempting to jump a fence and needed medical assistance to get down.

According to a Vallejo Police Department social media post, an officer spotted a stolen 2018 Infiniti Q50 traveling on Tennessee Street near Vervais Avenue in the early morning hours of Oct. 16. When the officer attempted to pull over the car, it allegedly accelerated away, sparking a high-speed chase.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop near the Cal Maritime campus, and two men jumped out and ran toward the college’s gated dorms, according to authorities.

According to police, both men attempted to climb over the fence, but only the passenger succeeded. The driver of the vehicle was not so fortunate.

“The Vallejo Fire Department and Medic Ambulance arrived and successfully removed the driver’s leg from the security spike,” the police report said. “He was then transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before incarceration.”

The other suspect escaped.

Near the suspects’ car, authorities discovered a loaded, unregistered firearm. They also contacted the vehicle’s owner, who arrived on the scene and returned the vehicle.

The Cal Maritime Police Department was notified of the incident and was present at the scene, according to Sgt. Rashad Hollis, the Vallejo Police Department’s public information officer. The suspect had to have surgery.
