Tech companies, big bank slash hundreds more Bay Area jobs as layoffs widen

Tech layoffs: two years, 29,000-plus jobs lost in Bay Area

SAN RAMON, CA — Tech companies and a major bank have cut hundreds of jobs in the Bay Area, adding to the region’s already-heavy job losses.

According to official notices filed with the state labor agency, Roku, Bloom Energy, and BMO have revealed plans to cut a total of 411 jobs in the Bay Area.

An additional 183 tech jobs are being cut as a result of layoffs at streaming video giant Roku and green technology firm Bloom Energy.

Here are the latest Bay Area job cuts, as detailed in WARN notices sent to the state Employment Development Department (EDD):

— BMO, which carried out the layoffs after acquiring Bank of the West, has decided to eliminate 228 jobs in the Bay Area. These include 200 layoffs in San Ramon and 28 in San Francisco.

— Roku, which has orchestrated three distinct rounds of layoffs, one in 2022 and two in 2023, informed the EDD that it has decided to cut 136 jobs in San Jose.

— Bloom Energy announced plans to lay off 47 of its own employees. In addition, the company is laying off 50 contractors who were on assignment from staffing agencies.

With the most recent round of layoffs, tech firms have informed the state EDD of their intention to cut well over 29,100 jobs in the Bay Area over a nearly two-year period beginning in January 2022.

According to the EDD, the Bay Area lost 5,200 jobs in September and has now lost 9,600 jobs in the last three months.
