Tonight, watch an Oakland ‘Top Chef’ compete on ‘Beat Bobby Flay’

Nelson German of alaMar Dominican Kitchen takes on Flay on the Food Network at 9 p.m. PT.

Bobby Flay’s confident smile on TV is so glued-on that it would require industrial-strength oven cleaner to remove it. Can Oakland’s own Nelson German pull it off?

Cooking fans will find out tonight when German, a former “Top Chef” contestant, competes against the red-headed menace on the Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay.” The action begins at 9 p.m. PT on Season 34’s “This Kitchen’s Crowded.”

German, who appeared on Season 18 of “Top Chef,” is the chef and owner of Oakland’s Afro-Latino cocktail bar Sobre Mesa as well as alaMar Kitchen – or, rather, alaMar Dominican Kitchen, as Nelson recently reinvented the restaurant and menu to highlight his culinary upbringing in Manhattan’s Washington Heights.

To commemorate the TV battle, alaMar Dominican Kitchen will host a viewing party tonight from 9 to 10 p.m. at 100 Grand Ave. #111 in Oakland. The chef and his team will be present, and the show will be shown on a big-screen TV. Reservations are available on OpenTable (walk-ins are also welcome).

Nelson’s opponent this evening in beating Bobby Flay is chef Carlos Anthony, who works at Herb & Wood in San Diego, a restaurant owned by Brian Malarkey of “Top Chef: All-Stars.” Kardea Brown, a Southern chef, and actor Kevin Pollak are among the judges.
