Snap’s longtime vice president of engineering and monetization is exiting the company

Snap has lost yet another top executive.

Nima Khajehnouri, Snapchat’s vice president of engineering for the past nine years, will leave the company next month, according to two people familiar with the company who asked to remain anonymous in order to speak freely. Insider is aware of their identities.

Khajehnouri oversaw Snapchat app engineering as well as monetization efforts such as ads and Snapchat+ subscriptions.

A spokesman for the company declined to comment, but confirmed Khajehnouri’s departure on December 1. Khajehnouri did not respond to an interview request.

Khajehnouri is the latest high-level departure and change at Snap, as CEO Evan Spiegel struggles to achieve profitability and consistent revenue growth since the company’s IPO in 2017. Spiegel is said to now oversee all leaders of Snap’s business, as well as product, which he has been closely monitoring for years.

Despite having 406 million daily users, Snap is scrambling to remake its advertising business, which accounts for the majority of its revenue, while also working to generate subscription revenue by offering users premium features for a monthly fee. Other attempts to create new revenue streams have failed, such as the division for augmented reality business services, which was quickly shut down.

Snap’s executive ranks have also changed quickly. Jeremi Gorman, Snap’s chief business officer, and Peter Naylor, the company’s head of sales, both left the company after a mass layoff last year. Snap announced Jerry Hunter’s departure as Snap’s first COO at the end of October, along with the company’s disappointing third-quarter results. According to the company, neither he nor Gorman will be replaced.

Several other executives left Snap earlier this year as well. Ben Schwerin, senior vice president of content and partnerships, left to join Coatue in April. Biswanath Panda, the company’s vice president of monetization engineering who reported to Khajehnouri, left in May after only a year in the position to join Uber. Jacob Andreou, Snap’s former senior vice president of product and growth, left the company in 2015 and joined Greylock Partners. Peter Sellis, Snap’s vice president of product, left the company in September after eight years to take on a similar role at Discord.

Following Hunter’s promotion to COO, Khajehnouri oversaw all engineering for nearly a year. Snap hired Eric Young as its new senior vice president of engineering in June, and Khajehnouri will now report to him.

Around the same time, engineering employees wondered how long Khajehnouri would stay at Snap after being effectively “passed over” for a permanent promotion, according to Insider.

Despite the numerous departures, Snap has hired new executives this year. Darshan Kantak joined as senior vice president of revenue product, Patrick Harris as president of Americas, Ronan Harris as president of EMEA, and Ajit Mohan as president of APAC, in addition to Young.
