Goldman Sachs: 21 stocks returning cash to shareholders through buybacks and dividends, setting them up to beat the market

  • According to David Kostin and his team, companies are continuing to spend cash even as EPS is down.
  • Balance sheet strength will be top of mind during third-quarter earnings.
  • Companies with strong balance sheets will continue to reward shareholders.

The bond market is causing concern in the stock market.

The 10-year Treasury yield surpassed 5% on Monday, a level not seen since 2007. This is because the Fed is likely to keep interest rates higher for longer in order to combat inflation, which raises borrowing costs.

According to a Goldman Sachs note dated October 20, companies with high-cost debt to repay are less appealing to investors. Meanwhile, according to David Kostin’s note, investor interest will shift toward companies with strong balance sheets that can return cash to shareholders.

According to Kostin, S&P companies’ cash spending, including dealmaking and dividends, increased by 12% in the first half of the year, despite a 4% decline in earnings per share. How much of their cash reserves have been depleted will be revealed in the coming weeks as earnings calls are held and investors focus on balance-sheet strength.

So far, the pain has been felt in stock buybacks, which are down 22% year on year in the first half. This is a trend that is expected to continue as long as economic conditions remain tight. According to the investment bank, companies that must choose between investing in growth and returning cash to shareholders will choose the former. It’s an unpopular move that will turn off investors, implying that stocks in this sector will underperform.

Companies with strong balance sheets, on the other hand, will continue to reward shareholders, and Kostin expects their stocks to outperform. Kostin and his colleagues predict that buyback spending will increase by 4% next year as rate hikes come to an end. Dividend payments are expected to increase by 4% in 2024.
