Oakland: Police identify 20-year-old killed in double shooting

OAKLAND — Police in this city have identified a 20-year-old man who was killed in a shooting in late August that also injured an 18-year-old man.

Demani William, 20, of San Francisco, was fatally shot on August 30. No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting, and police are looking into whether it was gang-related, according to authorities.

A little after midnight on Aug. 30, William and an 18-year-old man were discovered with gunshot wounds on the 1400 block of 8th Avenue. According to authorities, the shooting occurred in a different part of Oakland, in the 600 block of East 18th Street.

The 18-year-old was taken to the hospital but survived. Officers discovered a loaded pistol with an extended magazine during a search of the vehicle he and William were in, according to police.

Police have not stated whether they have identified a specific motive or released any information about potential suspects.

In the days following his death, his Instagram page was inundated with condolences, but also with several comments from one account mocking his violent death, including one implying firsthand knowledge of where he was shot. According to police, dozens of shots were fired.

Oakland police and Crime Stoppers are offering up to $15,000 in reward money for information leading to the shooter’s arrest. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
