Man arrested, charged with murder in girlfriend’s Daly City shooting death
Aubrey Avery Jr., 42, allegedly shot his girlfriend, 49-year-old Grace Goodman multiple times on Sept. 2
DALY CITY (AP) — San Mateo County prosecutors have charged a Daly City man with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend, just hours after police responded to a report that he had threatened her with a gun.
According to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, officers arrived around 1 a.m. Sept. 2 at the Daly City home shared by Aubrey Avery Jr., 42, his girlfriend, Grace Goodman, 49, and Goodman’s brother and mother. Responding officers stated that none of the people they spoke with were cooperative, and both Avery and Goodman denied the presence of a gun on the scene.
The same group of officers returned to the home less than seven hours later, at 7:30 a.m., due to reports of a shooting. They discovered Grace Goodman in the garage with multiple gunshot wounds when they arrived. Prosecutors did not specify whether the victim died at the scene or in a hospital.
Goodman’s mother told investigators that she heard a gunshot before seeing Avery flee the scene from the garage. After a brief foot pursuit, police apprehended Avery about a half mile away from his home.
Prosecutors said the suspected murder weapon was discovered in a nearby trash can.
Avery was formally charged with murder on September 5 and is currently being held without bail.
