Wrong-way collision on Highway 680 killed one, hospitalized two Saturday morning
The crash happened near the Auto Mall Parkway offramp in Fremont
FREMONT, CA — A woman passenger was killed and two drivers were seriously injured in a wrong-way crash on southbound Interstate Highway 680 early Saturday morning, according to authorities.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a gray Dodge Ram driver was traveling the wrong way in the left lane of I-680 near the Auto Mall Parkway offramp in Fremont around 1:15 a.m. and collided with a white BMW 330i.
According to CHP Officer Tyler Hahn, the Dodge overturned and was engulfed in flames. The Dodge driver, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose for treatment of major injuries and burns.
According to the CHP, one of the passengers in the BMW, a woman in her mid-20s, was killed in the crash. The BMW driver survived the collision as well, but was taken to Regional Medical Center in San Jose for treatment of unknown injuries.
Authorities have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, which is still being investigated.
Highway 680’s southbound lanes were closed for about two hours, but they were reopened by 4:50 a.m.
